Put together by some of the SNC regulars, Shook is exactly what the doctor ordered and we at BTJ wish them a long life and many copies sold. Be sure to get yours ! And for all you people getting hit by the credit crunch : all issues are now entirely downloadable...for free !

JBL ES100

A new BIG, AFFORDABLE, and GOOD SOUNDING speaker is born.

We know JBL from those days they were the only real speaker-builders on the market. If you had no JBL, you were not hip nor did you have a good sound in your house.

After decades of trying out new ranges and models, we didn’t hear much good from JBL with their low-cost models for the consumer market. You had to go for a JBL PRO monitor or a high-end – and accordingly high price – model to get good performance. Over the last 15 years they must have had over 30 lines with over 100 types of speakers, from small bookshelf speakers to large surround systems. One of the last ranges that had an ‘acceptable’ sound and were ‘affordable’ was the so called ‘Northridge’ series. But no one I know who heard them was actually enthusiastic about them. So they upgraded the line a bit and called them the E-series. These E-series still are available, but now there is the new line ES-series. The added S stands for “Super-tweeter”, but this can’t be the only thing that has changed. One way or another, by changing the cross-over frequencies, they managed to get a sweet sounding system that just reveals enough to call them almost ‘high-end’.

In the ES line, there are small bookshelf speakers, subwoofers, large speakers and also ‘very large’ speakers. We are not that fund of subwoofers, so a speaker that gives the bottom octave without a subwoofer would be nice, and here JBL managed to make a speaker system capable of delivering real bass without loosing the transparent medium and detailed highs for a price of about 900 Euro (pair) ! All right, 900 Euro for a set is not that cheap, but considering what you get, it is.

So here is a short description : 5 loudspeakers in one cabinet of 1.5 meters high. Two 10” woofers, a 4” medium, an aluminium dome tweeter and a Super Tweeter ! Two 10” woofers ??!! Yes ! And they can deliver enough power to make you feel in a live concert !
Whether you like to play them soft or loud, listen to jazz, classics, rock, disco or dub, the power is there, details are there and what’s most important, it is always fun ! I won’t go deep into specs nor sound descriptions but these words should cover it : Relaxed listening while hearing details, you are ‘in’ the music (yes, audiophiles will say this is a contradiction : relaxed listening and ‘forward sound’, but the ES100’s manage to deliver both), no dynamic compression, full range and deep bass, good “sound staging” though not expressively ‘present’.

I enjoy these speakers over many other more expensive hi-fi sets. I put them under my old good 4312 MKII studio monitors. They are a great stand for them, and more than half the time they do the job of delivering full bodied grooves.
More goodies and specs on www.jbl.com.
