WALK TALL !

As a nice little pre-taster for BTJ's upcoming straight jazz dance party "The Return of the jazz monster" we've prepared something quite special from (as Rainer Trueby states) 'a true legend and a major key figure in this whole Jazz/dance and beyond movement'.Yes people, Paul Murphy has prepared and mixed a genuine oldskool jazz dj-set, served straight up on BTJ radio! Enjoy.

ON THE WALL..

BRASIL 1968... Gilberto Gil: gilberto gil (philips 1968).. Jorge Ben: jorge ben (philips 1968).. Caetano Veloso: caetano veloso (philips 1968)..

Hi, it's the Martian, from the hifi-corner again! This time, i've got three interesting items for you.

1 The Onkyo DX-7555 CD player.
This is for the hifi-nuts among us. The guys at Onkyo (Japan) have done their best this time.
The most upmarket CD player in their line now is the DX-7555.
I got the unit from a friend, tested it, and I won't give it back! This is a real sweetheart of a player, beginning with the gorgeous, classy looks. The legendary Teac VRDS-10 must have been an inspiration to this design, wich is a good thing.
The sound is neutral, not so spectacular at first sight (er, hearing). But the definition is extra-ordinary! Here we can talk about "audio illusions", the thing gets you deeper into the music! Like an extra dimension. It works especially good on live recordings. Even the (very good) Sony QS players have to give way here.
This is as close to hi-end as most of us will ever get. At 500 € it isn't really cheap, but for such a sound, it is, in fact, a bargain.
It features the new Wolfson DA converters, wich are spectacular.
There is only a fixed output, so no discussions about audio degradation by the volume control here.
A DA filtering setting can be set to sharp or soft. This is interesting to fine-tune the sound.
This is a stereo CD player only, so no SACD or DVDaudio. It reads MP3 disks, tough.
The remote control is a very fine, scientific-looking thing. Here several setup settings can be changed.
Changing tunes on the unit itself is with such a rotary button - fine!

For another, more elaborate test, check here.

2 Denon
For you there who are saving pennys for Pioneer mixers or players, you could be doing good on checking Denon again. Lately, they launched many new products (mixers now too!), but this time at more affordable prices. Well below those from Pioneer.
You can easily check this on the great site of our friend Koen at bekafun.com. Search for Denon brand…

3 Update on active nearfield monitors.
I told you about this issue before. Now, several friends have bought such speakers. I recently heard actives from Fostex, KRK Rok8 and Yamaha. The result is always the same: great sound for a low price. How far this has evolved after the absolute Meyer HD-1 monitors, which set the trend fifteen years ago.
For DJ's and project studios this choice is evident, but also for home hifi-listening, i would choose such a system.
So, forget about separate amps and speakers: go active!!!
Also, many models can be viewed at bekafun.com.

Questions welcome, till next time,
The Martian

GET SHOOK !

After the demise of our favourite music-rag Straight No Chaser, our hunger for letters on paper was only fed by Wax Poetics, a worthy substitute, but not exactly snooping out the latest trends in the development of the jazz spirit...
Well, now Shook has come to the rescue !
Put together by some of the SNC regulars, Shook is exactly what the doctor ordered ! Number Five is now underway and it's looking very promising...
And for all you people getting hit by the credit crunch : all issues are now entirely downloadable...for free !
